I can’t believe I am celebrating my first mother’s day! Now, I'm one of them. I'm an unkempt, sleep-deprived new mom who permanently has baby on the brain. For seven months now, since a 7-pound, 14 ounce baby boy named Owen entered the world, my life has been forever changed!
I once read that “making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” I never knew what this truly meant until I held Owen for the first time. When the nurse brought him over to me I felt as if my heart swelled several sizes and then I burst into tears of joy, I know it was partly hormones but also it was one of the most profound moments of my life. I knew that I loved this little person more than myself. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the need to protect him, love him and do whatever was necessary to make sure he was perfectly happy. In that moment a mother was born and it was my turn. I now obsess over car seat safety, BPA toxins in plastic, baby proofing our home, and a million other crazy thoughts . When we were living in NYC I actually was afraid of squirrels. I was convinced a rabid squirrel was going to jump into the stroller and hurt him. I know that the odds of a crazed squirrel jumping into a stroller are slim to none, but I was convinced that it was going to happen. It’s no wonder mothers are exhausted… we have so many things to worry about.

I finally have someone who enjoys my singing, particularly my off-key rendition of The Apples and Banana Song. I have someone who thinks I am hilarious and gives me a courtesy laugh if my joke falls flat. The last few minutes before he falls asleep rubbing his eyes with the back of his chubby little hands makes all the screaming, all the rocking, all the sleepless nights worth it. Being a mom isn’t easy but it is the best thing I have ever done in my life!
Happy Mother’s Day!!!

James and Owen spoiled me for my first Mother's day! They brought me breakfast in bed which was extra yummy! It was way better than my usual bowl of cheerios. James even remembered to put a Mountain Dew on the tray: ) I opened my cards and I got a gift card to go to a SPA! Owen must have told his daddy that mommy needed a massage. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better James took me to a great restaurant for dinner. Not only did we go to dinner but we went ALONE! Owen spent the evening having fun with his Aunt Tammy. I had a fantastic mother's day!
